Best Dark Souls Game to Start With: Which One to Play First?

Dark Souls has made its spot as one of the best action-RPG games of all time.

Just like Demon’s Souls, it is quite dark, brutal, and takes a lot from you to be able to play this third-person RPG game that is set in a world full of blood-hungry monsters and other beings.

These dark souls will try to erase your life as quickly as they can and it’s no surprise that the Dark Souls franchise got its reputation from the Gory story and gameplay.

As a savage gamer, you must be wondering, which Dark Souls game should I start with? Well, the answer is simple, let’s find out.

1. Dark Souls 3

DeveloperFromSoftware Inc.
Release DateMarch 24, 2016
PlatformsPlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

Dark Souls 3 is the ideal Dark Souls game to start with. It offers blood-hungry monsters, but most importantly, badass weapons to eradicate them.

On the other hand, you’re also getting terrific terrain to go ham with the monsters.

Sure, the first Dark Souls was a masterpiece but Dark Souls 3 takes it to a whole another level by its dark yet beautiful world.

Dark Souls 3 is the ideal game to start playing the series with if you’re a beginner. But honestly, you can either pick Dark Souls 3 or Dark Souls Remastered since they’re both equally badass.

However, DS3 is more fast-paced with easier yet better combat and you can play the other games after you’ve mastered DS3.

Dark Souls 3 is known for suffering from some frame drops issues but the game’s bosses are so overpowered that it can make your computer go crazy. I’m just kidding, okay?

Most people do prefer playing Dark Souls 3 first due to its awesome gameplay, sick obstacles, and badass development of the lore to give you the darkest adventure ever.

Considering all these points, in our opinion, Dark Souls 3 is the ideal game to start the series with.

2. Dark Souls Remastered

DeveloperFromSoftware Inc., QLOC, Virtuos
Release DateMay 24, 2018
PlatformsPlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows

This one got DARK real quick. If you loved Dark Souls 1, then Dark Souls Remastered will make sure to wake that nostalgic area of your brain up.

Arriving on Nintendo Switch, the remastered version really lit a fire with its beautiful graphics and very familiar gameplay experience.

Even though there were some basic frame rate drops issues, that’s what the Dark Souls series is known for. I’d also recommend you to play the remastered version first just because it’s the latest one.

In other words, Dark Souls Remastered is a better version of the already-existing Dark Souls game and it delivers the experience excellently.

You are free to explore Lordran and experience the dark world full of blood-thirsty monsters.

3. Dark Souls 1

DeveloperFromSoftware Inc.
Release DateSeptember 22, 2011
PlatformsPlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows

The introduction of this Dark world was enough to make all action-RPG fans go crazy.

But trust me, Dark Souls 1 is a great way to start the series with. However, Dark Souls 3 and Remastered are just superior in so many ways.

On the other hand, if you want to stay faithful to the flow of these games, you should definitely try Dark Souls 1. It’s a must-play game but you have to prioritize.

In DS1, you’re going to die a LOT. Literally, anywhere you can imagine, this game is by no means easy.

And that’s exactly why it’s not recommended for beginners. On the other hand, once you understand the working of this game, you’ll be enjoying every inch of it.

There’s a lot of love about this game aside from killing monsters and surviving.

4. Dark Souls 2

DeveloperFromSoftware Inc.
Release DateMarch 11, 2014
PlatformsPlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows

Dark Souls 2 isn’t the most respected Souls game but it’s not terrible either.

Dark Souls 2 is not ideal to start with due to the fact that it’s painfully difficult and a lot of players struggle with passing the game.

Dark Souls 2 is indeed a pretty interesting sequel. With the deep gameplay mechanics and heated moments, you’ll be enjoying it.

But it still doesn’t change the fact that it’s not the perfect Dark Souls game either.

You should play Dark Souls 2 religiously but it’s not recommended to start your Dark Souls journey with.

Conclusion

Dark Souls is an excellent action-RPG game. With its clever multiplayer and excellent gameplay, you’re not missing out on anything.

If you were worried about which Dark Souls game you should start with, in our opinion, you should either go with Dark Souls 3 or Dark Souls Remastered. Both of these titles are fine.
