While Sims 4 isn’t a very hardware-intensive game, you can’t expect to get playable framerates on a complete potato of a laptop either.

What’s really frustrating is that most websites including the official EA download page won’t give you relevant information on exactly what you need to run this game.

For instance, the EA official system requirements webpage has a massive disparity between “minimum” and “recommended” hardware.

Plus, things change completely if you have downloaded Packs (expansions, DLCs, etc.). So, what is the best laptop for Sims 4? Honestly, it depends.

Which graphical settings are you using? Do you play on a 1080p monitor or a 4K TV? Are you playing the base game, or do you have expansion packs installed? There is no way for us to sit here and magically know your settings, as well as the mods/ packs you are using.

This is why we went with a laptop that can handle Sims 4 on max settings at 60+ fps even with a bunch of expansions installed.

Our top choice is the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14. Is it overkill? Definitely, but this laptop will run Sims 4 at 4k ultra settings and 60+ fps even if you have dozens of expansion packs and mods installed.

And it will keep running Sims 4 smoothly for at least another 5 years, along with any future expansions that come out.

Here is our list of 7 best laptop for Sims 4:

Built like an exotic car, the Zephyrus G14 is almost the perfect gaming laptop. It has an extremely powerful processor, the latest in GPU technology from NVIDIA, an excellent 144Hz 100% sRGB Full HD display, and the overall footprint is compact.

Even the battery life, which is one of the main weaknesses on any gaming laptop, is actually not an issue with the Zephyrus G14.

AMD has worked some real magic with their Zen 3 cores, and the Ryzen 9 5900HS is the 2nd most powerful laptop processor at the time of writing this article.

The most powerful being the Ryzen 9 5900HX, which is the exact same chip with slightly boosted clocks. Despite being the leader in both single and multi-threaded performance, AMD hasn’t dropped the ball on efficiency.

Because if you’re browsing the web or working in MS Office, you easily get 8 to 10 hours of battery life.

With its sleek design, matte black finish, and edge-to-edge RGB keyboard this is a laptop that looks stunning, yet not too flashy.

It is also the best laptop for modding games thanks to the massive 32GB of DDR4 RAM. You can easily transform it into a Photoshop or Premiere Pro workstation if you want because it packs one of Intel’s best processors- the 8 core i7-10870H.

And if you felt the display in this Gigabyte laptop might lack depth of color or wide viewing angles just because it is a gaming machine, you’d be very wrong. Because each AORUS 15G KC display is individually validated at the factory to meet X-Rite Pantone standards.

Plus, with a 240Hz refresh rate, you can game in esports titles and have a massive competitive advantage over most players.

Pros

  • Intel Core i7-10870H octacore processor with 16 threads and a max boost clock of 5Ghz
  • NVIDIA RTX 3060 graphics with 6GB GDDR6 VRAM, RT cores for raytracing, and Tensor cores for AI upscaling

  • Windforce Infinity dual-fan cooler
  • 802.11ax Wi-Fi

Cons

  • Mediocre battery life
  • Comes with a lot of bloatware installed, and you have to download updated drivers + Gigabyte utilities to get a lot of the features working

Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3

Last update on 2021-04-18 at 01:38 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

For the money, there isn’t a better gaming laptop. And if you just want to play Sims 4, this is THE perfect machine because it isn’t one-bit overkill. Especially if you play on high/ ultra and 1080p with mods installed.

Plus, this is a laptop most of you reading this article can actually afford, it isn’t some ultra-premium gaming machine.

The IdeaPad Gaming 3 sticks close to the Lenovo tradition of offering good build quality, a well-designed keyboard, and solid hardware at reasonable prices.

And with a Ryzen 7 4800H, you are getting one of the best 8-core CPUs there is. It is similar in performance to Intel’s 8-core 10th gen i7 processors but draws way less power.

And in productivity (video editing, rendering, etc.), it even pulls ahead of Intel’s best chips.

Pros

  • AMD Ryzen 7 4800H octacore 7nm processor, powered by Zen 2 cores for excellent IPC and energy efficiency
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650ti graphics with 4GB of GDDR6 VRAM
  • 8GB of DDR4 RAM
  • 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD
  • 120Hz 15.6” Full HD IPS display
  • Sleek, lightweight design for portability
  • 8 to 10 hours of battery life
  • USB Type-A, Type-C, RJ 45 Ethernet, HDMI, 802.11ax Wi-Fi
  • 720p webcam with dual microphones and a physical privacy shutter

Cons

  • The two 1.5W speakers sound quite poor
  • Fans can be quite loud while gaming

Lenovo has the IdeaPad Gaming 3, MSI has the GF75 for a similar price. Which one is better? Well, both have certain advantages and weaknesses compared to the other.

For instance, the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 has a much better processor in the Ryzen 7 4800H. This CPU is far better than the i5 10300H which has half the cores (and slightly worse single-core performance).

Lenovo also has the upper hand in graphics, albeit by a much smaller margin compared to their dominance in processor speed. With a GTX 1650, the MSI lags behind the Lenovo (which has a GTX 1650ti).

However, the MSI does have a larger display- 17 inches vs 15 inches. And it has a superior cooler, so it runs quieter and cooler than the Lenovo.

Typing is easier on the MSI thanks to the larger, more spacious keyboard.

Pros

  • Intel Core i5-10300H quad-core Comet Lake processor
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 graphics with 4GB of VRAM
  • 8GB of DDR4 RAM
  • 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD
  • 17.3” Full HD IPS-level 120Hz display
  • MSI Cooler Boost 5 technology for quieter fans and better thermals while gaming (two fans and 7 heat pipes)
  • Large, spacious red LED backlit keyboard

Cons

  • Quite heavy
  • Mediocre battery life

You can’t go wrong with an HP, at any budget. The Pavilion we’re reviewing has a boring and unimaginative model name, but its performance is anything but boring.

With a Ryzen 5 4600H 6-core processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 graphics, this is one of the best low-end gaming laptops out there. Only the excellent Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 beats it out in terms of value for money.

This HP laptop has twice the RAM of the Lenovo or MSI laptop, with half the storage space. However, upgrading your laptop’s SSD is extremely easy.

And you gain something in the form of a 1TB HDD, which isn’t so good for tasks that require high transfer speeds but very good for mass storage of movies or games.

Pros

  • Ryzen 5 4600H 6-core, 12-thread processor (7nm, Zen 2)
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 4GB graphics
  • 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD +1TB HDD, Windows 10 installed on the SSD
  • 15.6” FHD display
  • Full-size backlit keyboard
  • USB Type-C, USB Type-A, HDMI

Cons

  • 802.11ac Wi-Fi instead of the newer 802.11ax
  • Mediocre battery life

Unlike the other laptops on our list, this is a “home/ business” machine. So you don’t get any flashy styling or flared exhausts with sharp edges. Nor do you get any dedicated graphics.

Still, it packs quite the punch thanks to an Intel Core i7-1165G7 Tiger Lake processor with integrated Xe graphics which should be more than enough for Sims 4 at 1080p.

The display is a regular old 15.6” FHD panel, it’s what they call an “IPS-level” panel so basically a regular WVA which is a TN with better viewing angles and colors. Not true IPS, which is a shame at this price.

The MSI Center app is not very useful, and we recommend you remove it to speed up the boot times and remove some load from the processor.

Pros

  • Intel Tiger Lake i7-1165G7 quad-core with 8 threads
  • Xe integrated graphics
  • 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD
  • 15.6” FHD display
  • 802.11ax Wi-Fi
  • Sleek and lightweight (just 0.67” thick and 3.53lbs)

Cons

  • No IPS panel
  • For a home/business laptop of this price, the webcam isn’t all that great

Acer Aspire 5 A517-52-713G

Acer Aspire 5 A517-52-713G, 17.3" Full HD IPS Display, 11th Gen Intel Core i7-1165G7, Intel Iris Xe Graphics, 16GB DDR4, 512GB NVMe SSD, WiFi 6, Fingerprint Reader, Backlit Keyboard
  • Get high performance, responsiveness and long battery life with the Intel Core i7-1165G7 Processor - up to 4.7GHz, 4 cores, 8 threads, 12MB Intel Smart Cache
  • 17.3" Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS Widescreen LED-backlit Display | Intel Iris Xe Graphics
  • 16GB DDR4 Memory (Expandable to 24GB) and 512GB NVMe SSD
  • 1 - USB 3.2 (Type-C) Gen 1 port (up to 5 Gbps) | 2 - USB 3.2 Gen 1 Port (one with Power-off Charging) | 1 - USB 2.0 Port | 1 - HDMI Port with HDCP support
  • Intel Wireless Wi-Fi 6 | Acer Fingerprint Reader | Backlit Keyboard | Up to 8 Hours Battery Life

Just like the MSI Modern 15, this is intended to be used at home or in the office. However, it does pack some extra features that the MSI laptop lacks.

Such as an actual IPS panel, which gives it accurate colors and excellent viewing angles. And a fingerprint reader built into the trackpad, which is a big deal if you’re working in a professional environment and want to secure your work from uninvited visitors.

The processor, RAM, and storage are the exact same between these two laptops. This means you will get similar performance in Sims 4 or any other game for that matter.

However, the battery life is better which means you can play longer or work longer. And the build quality is better too, with an all-metal chassis which is both light yet rigid.

Pros

  • Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor with 4 cores and 8 threads
  • Xe integrated graphics
  • 16GB of DDR4 RAM
  • 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD
  • 1920 x 1080 IPS panel, 17.3” inch display with narrow bezels
  • Full metal chassis, constructed with aluminum alloy
  • Just 0.78” thick, and under 5lbs in weight despite having a 17-inch display
  • Wi-Fi 6

Cons

  • Fingerprint reader should have been built into the power button
  • Needed a larger battery, 8hrs of battery life is fine but a laptop like this needs 10hrs or more

How To Select The Best Laptop For Sims 4

Sims 4 is a game that was released all the way back in 2014, so even modern integrated graphics will be enough to run it.

However, there are tons of graphical settings and resolution options to tinker with which can make an otherwise easy to run game very taxing on the hardware.

If you turn up the lighting, shadows, anti-aliasing, etc., you will end up with a game that can bring even modern mid-ranged gaming laptops to their knees.

And on top of that, there’s the matter of mods/ expansion packs which further increase the size of the game as well as its hardware requirements.

If you have 20+ GB of packs installed and are running the game at 4k, you need a fast quad-core processor and at least 6GB of graphics memory. Maxing out everything will bring the fps down, so it’s always a trade-off between performance and visuals.

We suggest plentiful RAM if you’re interested in modding or making videos for your YouTube channel. And a decent mid-range or higher graphics card for 4k Sims 4 gameplay.

The more sims you create within the game, the more stress you put on your hardware. More characters at the same time on your screen will stress your CPU, so it is important to have extra threads.

Something like an AMD Ryzen 7 or Intel Core i7 is what we recommend if you have hundreds of Sims in a complex environment with lots of objects (houses, vehicles, animals, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I have some expansion packs for Sims 4, and my system just barely meets the minimum requirements. But I am still lagging, why is that?

A. Expansion packs introduce new and more demanding hardware requirements, so you need to go on the official Origin.com page for each expansion and check the tab titled “system requirements”.

Q. I have a business/ student laptop, and it’s heating up a lot when I play Sims 4. What to do?

A. Normally, business and student laptops have inferior cooling solutions compared to gaming machines. They are not designed for sustained multi-hour gaming workloads that stress the CPU and GPU. So they do heat up a lot quicker.

Gaming laptops on the other hand, focus on thermals and performance but at the cost of louder fans. To compensate, you can use a cooling pad for your student/ office laptop which will assist the internal cooler and extend the lifespan of your laptop (if you game for several hours daily).

Q. I read on a lot of tech sites that Sims 4 isn’t a demanding game, yet you recommend gaming laptops to play it. Any particular reason?

A. We explained earlier that even though Sims 4 isn’t very advanced in terms of the engine it uses or the hardware requirements (it will run on a dual-core and 4GB of RAM), the point is to recommend laptops that handle every possible situation. If you play on the lowest graphical settings at 768p without any mods, that’s fine. You can get by with a cheap office laptop.

But someone who plays on their 4k TV and wants the best possible visuals will require a much more powerful system. And this article is all about the best laptop for Sims 4, not just laptops that can run Sims 4 on a budget.

Are there value options that give you the best of both worlds? Sure, we even reviewed a couple of those in this article. We only recommend the best, and these are laptops that will run Sims 4 on high settings, with mod, for at least the next 4 to 5 years.

Q. I have Sims 4 for Xbox One, how do I play it on my PC?

A. You can stream Xbox One to PC, we even have an article on how to do that. This lets you play your Xbox from anywhere in the house as long as you have a laptop nearby.

Q. I want to mod my installation of Sims 4, what benefits will I get?

A. More ways to play, more characters, more homes, more personalities, and tons of customization options that aren’t available in the base game. However, you need to look up some tutorials to install these mods.

Thankfully, there is a helpful community of Sims 4 modders out there who will point you in the right direction. You can find more information by visiting forums like this one.

Conclusion

Hopefully, this article gave you some helpful ideas on what to look for when buying the best laptop for Sims 4. There is no de-facto “BEST” laptop, only one that suits your needs and budget (as is always the case).

If you want to play Sims 4 on a budget, there are several options. But if you want to at least play on medium and 1080p, the Acer Aspire 5 A517 is a nice choice.

If you want the absolute best, there’s the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 with its Ryzen 9 5900HS processor and RTX 3060 graphics.

Not only will this laptop handle Sims 4 at ultra graphics and 4k resolution, but it will do so with a ton of mods installed.

And if you ever want to indulge in modern AAA gaming, this laptop will also handle titles such as Tomb Raider and Call of Duty with ease.
