Best Laptop For Civilization VI: Check Our Top Picks

Civilization VI is a deeply engaging and highly complex turn-based strategy game in which you build your own empire. You can go all the way from the Stone Age to the Information Age, and decide to ally with or fight against rival empires.

The game is extremely engaging, but what’s the best laptop for Civ 6? After all, depending on which graphics settings you’re using it can be quite hard to run. Especially at 4k resolution.

We did the research and came up with 7 of the best laptops for Civilization VI. Our top pick is the MSI GE66 Raider 10UH-210 for its exceptional performance and sleek design. Few can point out any serious flaws with this laptop, and even fewer will call it bad value for money. Yes, it’s expensive. But so is any other laptop with an RTX 3080 and i7-10870H.

What matters is how MSI has designed the overall package. With its 300Hz display plus solid build quality, this is truly one of the best laptops for gaming.

Yes, it will run Civ 6 maxed out at 4k without any issues. You can enjoy the game on your 4K OLED TV with GSync and 120Hz refresh rate.

Here is our list of 7 best laptop for Civ 6:

  • MSI GE66 Raider 10UH-210
  • ASUS TUF15
  • MSI GP65 Leopard 10SEK-048
  • Gigabyte AORUS 17G XC
  • MSI GF75 Thin 10UE-069
  • MSI Creator 15 Professional Laptop A10SFS-287
  • ASUS ROG Zephyrus

How To Select The Best Laptop For Civ 6?

Basically, just get a laptop that works well for games in general. Civilization VI does stress the CPU more than your standard AAA game though, so pay attention to that aspect.

Get something with good single-core speeds and at least 4 cores + 8 threads. We recommend a 6-core processor if you want to mod Civ 6 or stream gameplay live.

If you’re a content creator on Youtube, you might feel the need to bump it up to 8 cores in which case any of the latest Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 processors will be an excellent choice.

As for graphics, you honestly don’t need much. Even a basic mid-range GPU from the current generation will handle Civ 6 at max settings and 1080p/ 1440p resolution. If you’re going 4k, you might need an upper mid-range graphics card but that’s about it.

For this specific game, we prioritize colors and resolution over refresh rate since it’s a turn-based strategy with lots of tiny visual details.

The GE66 Raider brings a lot to the table. Like Wi-Fi 6E, a 300Hz refresh rate display with a pixel response time of just 3ms, an excellent cooler, and much more. You get a powerful CPU in the Intel Core i7-10870H which is a Comet Lake chip with 8 cores and 16 threads.

Sure, it’s still using the dated 14nm manufacturing process which means you get poor energy efficiency compared to Ryzen 4000 or 5000 series laptop processors.

However, in terms of single-core speed, these Comet Lake chips are still competitive with even Zen 3 processors. They do lag behind in multithreading and productivity, but for gaming an Intel Core i7-10870H is one of the best chips you can get in a laptop.

It has a boost clock of 5Ghz and is paired with 32GB of 3200MHz DDR4 RAM in this laptop. Not only can you play Civ 6 maxed out on 4K, but you can also use the exact same laptop for scientific work and video/ photo editing.

As for the GPU, it’s NVIDIA’s best (at the time of writing this article) An RTX 3080, with 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM. This isn’t comparable to the desktop version of the RTX 3080 since it has lower clocks and uses a different memory layout (GDDR6 vs GDDR6x).

However, it does beat out the older RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Super laptop GPUs significantly. And you get Tensor + RT cores for AI and raytracing, respectively. The Raider also packs a massive 99.9Wh battery, which is the maximum size allowed on an airplane.

Pros

  • Intel Core i7-10870H octacore Comet Lake processor with hyperthreading and 5Ghz turbo boost.
  • NVIDIA RTX 3080 16GB GDDR6 graphics with RT and Tensor cores for raytracing and DLSS.
  • 32GB dual-channel (16GB x2) 3200MHz DDR4 RAM.
  • 1TB PCIe NVMe storage.
  • Narrow-bezel 1080p 15.6” display with 3ms response time and 300Hz refresh rate.
  • Mystic Light RGB lighting on the keyboard, and an RGB light band on the front of the laptop so you can customize its looks.
  • Wi-Fi 6E operates on the 6Ghz band and expands on the original 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) standard.
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C with power delivery and display output, mini Display Port 1.4, RJ45 Ethernet, HDMI output, USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 2, SD card reader.
  • SteelSeries keyboard with per-key RGB lighting.
  • Massive 99.9Wh battery.
  • Cooler Booster 5 system with copper heat pipes and two large fans for more efficient cooling.
  • The best webcam on any gaming laptop, it’s FHD (1080p) and has good microphones built-in.

Cons

  • The side-firing Duo Wave speakers don’t sound all that good.
  • IPS-level display instead of true IPS display.

For the money, you really can’t get much better hardware. And it’s not just the fact that this ASUS TUF15 has a good CPU+GPU, it’s also built really well. Durable, resistant to dust and shock, all compared to an average non MIL-STD 810 laptop. The TUF15 is more about utilitarianism and functionality rather than style and superficial features.

The FHD 144hz display isn’t the best in terms of color accuracy or viewing angles. However, for the money it is really good.

You will have a good time playing Civilization VI, or any other game for that matter. Especially competitive/ esport titles such as Rainbow 6: Siege or Valorant. What’s really interesting though, is the Intel Core i7-10870H processor.

Why ASUS chose to go with an 8-core instead of the 6-core (Intel Core i7-107650H) for this price point is a true mystery. But hey, it’s a good thing they did because you’re getting 2 extra cores and 4 more threads compared to most other gaming laptops at this price point.

This means the TUF15 is actually better for streaming and multitasking compared to other laptops in its weight class. Its GTX 1660ti is a good lower mid-range GPU and should handle Civ 6 at 120/ 144 fps at 1080p without any issues.

Pros

  • Intel Core i7-10870H processor with 8 cores and 16 threads.
  • NVIDIA GTX 1660ti graphics with 6GB of GDDR6 VRAM.
  • 16GB of DDR4 memory.
  • 512GB PCIe NVMe storage.
  • MIL-STD 810 certification for toughness and durability.
  • FHD 144Hz 15.6” narrow bezel display.
  • USB 3.2 Type-A, HDMI, USB 3.2 Type-C, RJ45 Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6.
  • Backlit keyboard and DTS:X audio.
  • Robust and powerful cooling system.

Cons

  • Mediocre battery life.
  • Fans can get quite loud while gaming.

If you are willing to spend slightly more than the ASUS TUF15 for an RTX graphics card, the GP65 Leopard is a great option. You can’t take advantage of RTX in Civilization VI.

However, the RTX 2060 is faster than the GTX 1660ti. Which means higher framerates, or the same framerates with mods installed. You do get a downgrade in terms of processing power, from 8 cores in the TUF15 to 6 in the GP65 Leopard.

However, an Intel Core i7-10750H is no slouch and in terms of single-core speed, it’s exactly as fast as the i7-10870H. The keyboard in the GP65 Leopard is designed by SteelSeries and has per-key RGB lighting, plus the actual keys feel better to type on compared to the keys on the TUF15 keyboard.

And the display has 100% sRGB color space (75% NTSC), which puts it slightly ahead of the display you get on the ASUS TUF15. So you’re losing out on CPU multithreading ability, but gaining more in pretty much every other aspect- graphics, keyboard, display.

Pros

  • Intel Core i7-10750H hexacore processor with 12 threads and a boost clock of 5Ghz.
  • NVIDIA RTX 2060 graphics with 6GB of GDDR6 VRAM and RT + Tensor cores.
  • 16GB of dual-channel DDR4 RAM (2666Mhz), upgradable to 64GB.
  • 15.6” FHD thin-bezel 100% sRGB 144Hz display.
  • 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD.
  • SteelSeries per-key RGB keyboard.

Cons

  • The dual 3W speakers don’t sound very good.
  • The trackpad could’ve been better.

Gigabyte AORUS 17G XC

[spacer height="-20px"]Last update on 2021-07-29 at 07:10 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

The best way to describe this laptop is… different. Its looks aren’t exactly conventional, and it has this weird industrial/ 90s vibe going on. No seriously, parts of this laptop look like they came straight out of the mid-90s. Back when 16MB of RAM was considered a lot, and wireless internet was still in its infancy.

However, the actual hardware underneath this laptop’s hood is anything but dated. For instance, it packs an NVIDIA RTX 3070 graphics card with 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM.

This is more than enough to play Civ 6 modded, at 4k resolution, with all the graphics options turned up to maximum.

And, you can also enjoy the latest AAA games such as Cyberpunk 2077 on this laptop at 60+ FPS with raytracing enabled. The 17G XC also has an Intel Core i7-10870H processor which is excellent for everything from gaming to content creation.

Pros

  • Intel Core i7-10870H processor with 8 cores and 16 threads.
  • NVIDIA RTX 3070 graphics with 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM.
  • 32GB of dual-channel DDR4 memory.
  • 17.3” FHD IPS display with a refresh rate of 300Hz, one of the best displays we’ve seen on a gaming laptop.
  • Windforce cooler.
  • 802.11ax Wi-Fi and USB Type-C.
  • HDMI and Mini Display Port for connecting external displays
  • Backlit keyboard with tactile feedback and good key travel.
  • Fingerprint reader built into the trackpad.
  • Dual top-firing speakers actually sound decent for a gaming laptop.

Cons

  • Mediocre battery life.
  • 512GB of storage is lower than we expect from a laptop that costs this much.

MSI GF75 Thin 10UE-069

MSI GF75 Thin 10UE-069 17.3" 144Hz 3ms FHD Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7-10750H RTX3060 8GB 512GB NVMe SSD Win10

  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 6GB GDDR6
  • 10th Gen Intel Comet Lake Core i7-10750H 6 Cores (2.6GHz-5.0GHz, 12MB Intel Smart Cache, 45W)
  • 8GB DDR4 3200MHz | Hard Drive: 512GB NVMe SSD

If you want a lower mid-range gaming laptop with solid graphics performance, the GF75 10UE-069 is worth considering. It has the newer RTX 3000 graphics instead of Turing, and you get a large 17.3” screen.

The larger screen doesn’t make this laptop unwieldy though, since it is quite light and sleek despite packing a bigger display.

MSI did a good job with the cooler, which is partly due to the additional space afforded by the larger form factor. However, the fans and heat pipes themselves are well designed to transfer heat quietly and efficiently.

The GF75 Thin also has a backlit keyboard, although it isn’t RGB which is a slight downer. Not because we’re huge fans of making our laptops look like Christmas trees. But because having RGB gives you the option to choose any light color you want to match the rest of your setup.

Pros

  • Intel Core i7-10750H hexacore Comet Lake processor with a boost clock of 5Ghz.
  • NVIDIA RTX 3060 “Ampere” graphics with 6GB of GDDR6 VRAM.
  • 17.3” display with a refresh rate of 144Hz.
  • 512GB NVMe storage.
  • A large keyboard makes for a comfortable typing experience, plus the keys have good travel with well-designed keycaps.

Cons

  • 8GB of RAM is disappointing in a gaming laptop that costs this much, although you can easily upgrade the RAM.
  • The display is large but its colors are no different from a standard TN panel, which makes it feel outdated.

The “Creator” moniker implies that this is a laptop meant for serious work like content production. However, it is just as effective when used for gaming.

If you want a sleek laptop for playing Civilization VI at max settings and 4k resolution, this is it. Since the display is IPS, you get way better colors and viewing angles compared to a normal gaming laptop that has a TN panel.

The 4K display has 100% Adobe RGB color space so you can use it for professional-level photo and video editing, as well as for movies.

It’s a shame this laptop comes with an RTX 2070 Super though, and not because that’s a slow GPU. The new RTX 3070 is faster and more efficient, not to mention better at raytracing.

But hey, this laptop does cost a lot less than most RTX 3070 laptops, so there’s that. And it packs an Intel Core i7-10875H processor.

Pros

  • Intel Core i7-10875H octacore processor with 5.1Ghz max boost clock.
  • NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super graphics with 8B of GDDR6 VRAM.
  • 32GB of DDR4 memory for modding, 4k gaming, video editing, etc.
  • 4K UHD display IPS with 100% Adobe RGB color space.
  • 1TB of NVMe storage.
  • Sleek, mature design with good built quality.
  • Respectable battery life, as good as you can expect from a laptop with an Intel 14nm processor these days.
  • Triple fan cooler with better performance than most dual-fan setups you get on gaming laptops.
  • HDMI and Thunderbolt 3 for connecting multiple external displays.
  • Massive 99.9Wh battery.

Cons

  • This laptop would’ve been perfect with an AMD Ryzen processor.
  • While the Windows Hello fingerprint recognition feature is nice to have, the sensor itself should’ve been on the power button instead of the trackpad.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus

Even though the MSI GE66 Raider won overall champ due to its amazing RTX 3080 graphics card and 300Hz display, the Zephyrus might just be the most well-rounded laptop. Not gaming laptop, but Windows laptop in general.

It has a 1440p 144Hz IPS display, and the lid behind this display is machined with thousands of little dots that have prismatic film underneath for a unique glow pattern. You can customize the prismatic display on the lid to show your own logo, a name, or pretty much anything else.

And in terms of processing power, nothing from Intel can beat the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS. It has higher IPC and base clocks, resulting in better single-core performance that lets it pull comfortably ahead of Intel’s best Comet Lake chips in almost every application.

From games to productivity, the 5900HS lays a beatdown on Intel. And in terms of efficiency, TSMC’s 7nm process is far ahead of Intel’s dated 14nm++ design so the 5900HS manages to perform better WHILE consuming much less power.

Pros

  • AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS 7nm octacore processor with Zen 3 cores.
  • NVIDIA RTX 3060 6GB GDDR6 graphics.
  • 16GB of DDR4 RAM, 8GB of this is soldered.
  • 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD.
  • 802.11ax Wi-Fi.
  • 14” QHD (2560 x 1440) IPS display with a refresh rate of 144Hz.
  • Good battery life, thanks to a 76Wh battery and energy-efficient Ryzen processor.
  • Just 3.6lbs.
  • Well-built with machined alloy parts and an excellent dot-matrix prismatic lighting system on the lid.

Cons

  • No webcam.
  • Half the RAM is soldered, limiting future upgradability (you still have one stick that you can replace).

Conclusion

We hope this article gave you the required information to choose the best laptop for Civ 6. There are a lot of options out there, some more expensive than the others, but in the end, you should get what suits your needs.

While certain laptops will share similar specifications, and thus perform similarly, there are other things to differentiate them on. Like display type, size, battery life, keyboard quality, etc.

Our top pick is the MSI GE66 Raider, and it is by far the best laptop of the bunch in terms of graphical muscle. If you want pure CPU horsepower though, nothing beats the ASUS ROG Zephyrus which has an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS.

Want the best value for money? The ASUS TUF15 is the cheapest laptop on our list, despite using the exact same processor as the MSI GE66 Raider.
